Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
LOOK AT STEP BY STEP BY ACRYLIC NAILS?
Many women opt for artificial nails rather than natural. Some women prefer them because of their durability and strength, while others adore them for their length and beauty. No matter the reason, artificial nails are a commitment that also need maintenance about every two weeks to look their best. Whether this is your first time having acrylic nails applied, or you’re just curious about the process, the following step by step acrylic nails instructions may help you decide if they’re right for you.
1. Clean and Trim : Before an artificial tip can be applied, the natural nail bed has to be clean and dry. If you visit a professional manicurist, your nails will be filed, and your cuticles will be pushed back with an implement know as a cuticle pusher. Dead cuticle debris will then be removed from the edge with a cuticle nipper. Removing the old cuticle and pushing it back will create a more attractive nail bed and will also help nails look longer. Once the nail bed is clean and dry, nail tips may be applied.
2. Tips or No Tips? : For women who are satisfied with their natural nail length, applying an artificial tip may not be necessary. The gel and powder can be applied directly over the nail bed to strengthen and thickens the natural nail. Fro those opting for length, a faux nail tip is the next step. The nail tip that best matches your nail shape and width will be used.
3. Applying Liquid and Power : Once the nail tip is selected, it’s time to adhere the tip to the nail bed. Two small glass jars will normally hold both the monomer (liquid) and the polymer (powder) acrylic for easy access and application. The manicurist will then dip a small brush into both formulas and apply a small bead of acrylic on the nail and tip, working quickly to build up and blend the two nails (natural and tip). This is the most difficult part of artificial nail application. If the formulas are applied incorrectly, the nail may appear lumpy, too thick, or crooked.
4. File and Buff : Once the acrylic has been applied, the nail should be buff and filed to the desired shape and length. Buffing the nail will also help remove any remaining acrylic debris.
5. Paint and Polish : After the nail has applied, it’s time to find a nail polish color of your choice. Many women who finally have the long nails they’ve desired opt for a classic French manicure. Others choose from a broad spectrum of red, berry or neutral shades. Whatever color you select, rest assured nail polish adheres to false nails much longer than natural nails, meaning your nails are going to look great for a longer period!
6. Maintenance : As the natural nail grows beneath the surface of the artificial nail, the tip and the acrylic layer will grow out, exposing a natural ridge close to the cuticle. This visible line of demarcation requires an acrylic fill roughly every couple weeks to reapply the acrylic and blend the old tip with the new outgrowth. Salon visits can be costly. Check around in your area for the best quality and price for your fills.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MANICURES?
Most manicures start out the same way, with some people choosing the basics and others opting for more creative options. Learning about different types of manicures can help you decide what suits you best. After all, your nails say a lot about who you are!
TEN POPULAR TYPES OF MANICURES
Whether you let your personality shine with the latest 3-D décor or choose a simple nude polish, there are no limits when it comes to nail art. These popular manicure types can help you look perfectly put-together no matter what your style is.
- Basic Manicure If you are new to receiving manicures, start with a basic manicure, without all the extras. A nail technician will apply a cream, oil, or lotion to the cuticles first, then place the hands into a dish of warm water for about five minutes to soak. After the soaking process is over and cuticles have been tamed, they will dry the hand, and ask what shape and length you prefer. You can choose from square, oval, squoval (a combination of the two), or the popular stiletto.
At this point in the manicure, the shape of the nails has been defined, and it is time for a massage. Once that has been done, a base coat will be applied. Two coats of colored polish go over top, with a clear top coat finishing it all off. The hands are then placed under a nail dryer to speed up the drying process. - French Manicure The ever-classic French manicure is guaranteed to give you the clean, gorgeous look you desire. For this style, a clear, pale pink, or beige polish is applied over the entire nail, with white polish along the tip. The end result is healthy, vibrant and perfect for all occasions. You can’t go wrong with this look!
- Reverse French Manicure On the flip side, you might consider the reverse French manicure. This look took off on the high-fashion runways in Europe before achieving mainstream popularity. It is essentially a takeoff of the traditional French style, however the moon of the nail is painted white while the rest is done in a darker shade.
Another option is to switch up the colors with an all-white nail and a strip of color along the tip. Popular shades for this look are black and wine during fall and winter, and yellow and pink during spring and summer. - American Manicure An American manicure is similar to the French, but the shape and color of the nails differ. In this particular style, the tips are sometimes rounded, and use neutral or off white colors on the tips, instead of the drastic bright whites used in the French manicure. This can be worn in the classic style or made modern with some well placed glitter polish.
- Gel Manicure If you want a long-lasting manicure without the commitment of acrylic nails, a gel manicure is a great option. All the steps of a basic manicure are taken, except a special polish that requires curing under a LED light is also applied. This lasts days longer than the polish used for a basic manicure, and is less prone to chipping.
- Paraffin Manicure A paraffin manicure is a must for anyone with dry or overworked hands. Paraffin wax is used to infuse the skin with instantaneous moisture, leaving it smooth and supple. Based on the growth cycle of eyelashes, when applying lashes, lash stylist are trained to look for adult lashes to attach the individual synthetic lashes. Young (baby) lashes are left to allow them to fully develop and when it comes times to re-lash, we have new strong lashes to bond to.Lash extensions will not cause your natural eyelashes to fall out. Remember that your natural lashes have their own life cycle of falling and growing – like the hair found elsewhere on your body. It’s hard to notice small lashes falling out, but when attached to a thicker, longer lash they become much more noticeable! Once the extensions are removed, your own eyes may appear smaller, your natural lashes, shorter and sparser because you’ve been accustomed to a full set of longer, thicker lashes.
Yes. The bonding agent we use is waterproof and allows you to shower, swim, exercise. However we recommend that you DO NOT WASH your eye area for at least 24 hours after the initial eyelash extension application or touch-ups. This allows the bonding agent to fully dry and prolong the life of your extensions.
Yes, however you must only apply water based mascara. DO NOT USE OIL-BASED OR WATER-PROOF MASCARA. Waterproof mascara and any type of oil based mascara dissolves the bonding agent of the extensions and causes them to fall out sooner. Also, take care in washing off all eye makeup. Only use a water based eye makeup remover.
If you are planning to wear mascara in addition to the extensions, only use it on the tips of the extensions and with a very light hand. This will be enough to give your eyes that “pop” along with the extensions. Using mascara at the base of the extensions will get very clumpy.
Applying a full set of lashes takes about two hours, and can be maintained your-round with touch-ups recommended every 3 – 4 weeks. A half set of lashes are an economical alternative to achieve a similarly dramatic effect, applied as filler to thicken natural lashes, or applied out ward from the eye for a specialized look.
Everyone has different lashes, and depending on the condition of your own natural lashes, lash experts can only go a certain length or thickness (this is to ensure that your own lashes remain healthy). For example, if your natural lashes are on the shorter, thinner side, you won’t be able to get a crazy, dramatic Kim Kardashian look, because it won’t last. It’s better to start out with a half set (50% – 60% of your top lashes) if you aren’t sure or it’s your first time. It’s easier to add more than to remove lashes!
Lash extensions are applied while you are lying down with your eyes closed on a comfortable spa bed in a serene setting. This usually takes a bout 1.5 hours for a full se t of lashes, but also depends on the set of lashes you decide to get. After prepping your lashes, your bottom lashes are protected with a gel eye pad, lash extensions are then applied 1-to-1 with medical grade adhesive. It is a really relaxing, non-invasive treatment and most of our clients take the time to catch up on their beauty sleep!
Your new lashes will last between 4 to 6 weeks depending on your skincare routine and your own natural lash life cycle. To maintain the full look of your lashes, it will require you to maintain refills every 2-4 weeks.
- Do not get your lashes wet for at least 24 hours after application
- Do not go tanning for 24 hours after application
- Use an oil-free eye makeup remover
- Try not to run water directly on your lashes
- Do not rub, pick or pull your eyes
- If using mascara, use water based formulas
- When applying mascara avoiding the root area.
- Avoid using an eyelash curler
- Avoid using an eyelash curler
- Try to avoid exposure to heat, steam, sauna and friction
- Receiving chemical treatments, such as eyelash tinting or perming
- Receiving irritating eye area treatments, such as strong chemical peels, skin re-surfacing procedures, eyebrow waxing or laser treatments.
We recommend getting refills ever 2 to 4 weeks. If you wait too long your extensions will fall out and you will require a full set. Factors such as exposure to humidity, steam or touching your eyes a lot may cause the extensions to fall quicker. Refills can take from 45 – 60 minutes, depending on the state of your remaining lashes. A good sign of when you need a refill is when your extensions are 50% – 60% gone.
Since your eyes are shut the whole time lash extensions are being applied, no glue will ever get into your eyes. To avoid any irritation, however, the first safety precaution you can take is to be sure that the glue is safe for your eyes and doesn’t contain anything that can harm them, like formaldehyde. Shipping glues cross the world often leads to a buildup of formaldehyde by the time they reach the salon.
Additionally, it’s important to understand the difference between an allergic reaction and an infection. A licensed and experienced lash technician will not let an infection occur, but if you’re allergic to the glue, you’re still going to be allergic – this doesn’t mean the glue is inherently harmful.
No. Your technician should be trained properly to apply the adhesive and lashes in a way that is completely harmless. Your eyes are closed the entire time of the procedure. No matter how bad an allergic reaction may get, you will never go blind. The worse case scenario is that you need to go to the eye doctor to get specific eye drops to treat an allergic reaction.
If you experience any burning or discomfort during the procedure, causing your eyes to tear or making you cry, this is a huge red flag and you should certainly speak up. You may need to have your technician change the glue. Getting lash extensions should be a completely pain-free experience.
People want all different kinds of looks – some people go for drama, and some opt for something more natural. The benefits of mink lash extensions are that they are more feathery looking and lighter in general, so they put less pressure on your lashes. Mink lashes also come at a higher cost.
DO LASH EXTENSIONS FALL OUT OVER A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME?
Since each lash extension is attached to a single eyelash, they will fall out naturally along with the natural growth cycle of each lash. We recommend a touch-up every two to three weeks.
When an inexperienced professional applies lashes, he or she often applies one synthetic lash to three to four natural lashes, causing clumps or the lash to break and fall out. In addition, your lashes might fall out if you pick at them or try to pull them out yourself, which is a big no-no. But if you avoid those two problems, your lashes should stay intact.
WILL YOUR NATURAL LASHES GET HARMED OR DAMAGED?
The biggest myth is that lash extensions ruin your own lashes. They do not. If applied correctly and properly, they are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Be sure not to rub your eyes or tug or pull on the extensions because this can cause lash loss and even damage to your natural lashes. If lashes are applied properly and to each individual lash, they won’t fall out.
WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD YOU ASK WHEN SEARCHING FOR A REPUTABLE SALON OR PROFESSIONAL?
Because of the sensitive nature of the lashes and the surrounding area, finding someone who is certified to apply the lashes is definitely a must. Professionals use professional products and have been properly trained to apply the lashes without damaging your natural lashes or more importantly, your eyes.
Just like you would with a hairstylist, research who you want to go to and how long they have been working as a technician. Look at before-and-after photos, read reviews and always make sure they are licensed and lash-certified.
- You have radically change your hair color. For very dark haired people who dye their hair a much lighter color, dark eyebrows can be a dead giveaway. In this situation, tinting the eyebrows one or two shades lighter is an easy and effective way to make the change lkki more natural. Similarly, blondes and redheads who wish to dye their hair dark may also consider tinting their eyebrows to match. However, you should remember that your eyebrows don’t necessarily have to match your hair color precisely. You are generally advised to keep your eyebrows one or two shades lighter or darker than your hair color.
- You have noticed grey hairs in your eyebrows. Greying hair is a natural part of getting older. Whereas some people choose to let nature take its course, others prefer to conceal it. Although plucking the odd stray hair from the scalp is fine, plucking hairs from the relatively sparse eyebrow area is likely to produce unsightly bald patches and leave the brow looking misshapen. For this reason, you are advised to avoid the tweezers and opt instead for an eyebrow tint, which simply dyes the grey to match the surrounding hairs.
- You want thicker looking eyebrows. Pale, translucent hairs can make the eyebrows look thin and straggly. Tinting these hairs would reveal a neat, shapely brow you never even knew was there. Even though the thickness and denseness of your eyebrow hair can of course not be changed in the tinting session alone, the darker color will make them appear naturally thicker.
- You want to add definition to your face. It’s amazing what a difference a nice pair of shapely eyebrows can make to the structure of the face. Having neat, define eyebrows frames the eyes, boosts facial symmetry and creates an attractive high-contrast look.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHADE OF EYEBROW TINT
It’s a nightmare scenario-coming out of the salon with big, horrible unnatural looking brows. How do you make sure you avoid looking like your eyebrows have been drawn on? The trick is to choose a shade of that perfectly suits your skin tone and hair color.
Luckily, your beauty professional will be able to recommend the most suitable shade, while taking your own preferences into account. If you want to achieve as natural a look as possible, you are advised to only ever lighten or darken your eyebrows by one or two shades. Eyebrow tints are available in a range of colors, including:
- Black – recommended for use with black hair only.
- Taupe – a lighter brown shade with a hint of grey.
- Chestnut – a brown/red color great for redheads and brunettes who want their brows to look browner than taupe (which is more of a grey/brown).
- Blonde – for people with fair hair or skin who want their eyebrows lightening.
- Grey – for people with white or grey hair who want their eyebrows darkening or lightening.
- Carrying out a patch test at least 24 hours prior to treatment
- Using a vegetable-based stain to minimize the risk of irritation
- Using Vaseline or some kind of blocking solution to keep the tint off the skin
- Using a disposable applicator to prevent the spread of infection between clients.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TREATMENT?
Eyebrow tinting sessions generally follow the same procedure; however, your beauty professional should also explain each step of the treatment to you along the way. You can expect to experience something similar to the following:
After your patch test and consultation, your beauty professional will rub the area around your eyebrows with petroleum jelly to prevent the dye from staining the skin. He or she will then comb the tint from the inside corners of the eyebrows to the out, using a disposable applicator. The tint will then need about 5-10 minutes to develop, after which it will be removed using a cotton wipe.
The tint is likely to stain the skin between the brow hairs initially, making them appear darker in the first day or so than they really are. Don’t panic if your brows look strange to you at first – the difference is bound to feel a little odd initially but you’ll soon get used to it.
HOW LONG SHOULD EYEBROW TINTING TREATMENT TAKE?
Depending on who administers your treatment, an eyebrow tint should take no longer than 20-25 minutes.
HOW LONG SHOULD AN EYEBROW TINT LAST?
Eyebrow tint is described as semi-permanent dye not because the colour fades, but because eyebrow hairs have a very short growth cycle. Eyebrow hairs tend to fall out within 6-8 weeks, taking the tint with them.
